When Your Weekend Plans go to Shit

Can you put swear words in blog post titles? I don’t care, I’m doing it.

So if you couldn’t tell already, I’m one of those people that always has to be doing something, and usually that something is outside in nature exploring new things.

Bobby likes to joke that pretty soon I won’t have anywhere else to go in Iceland because I’ve done it all already. I don’t think thats true…Iceland is a big country! Well no it isn’t…but there is SO much to see! Plus, I could die next week so I better do what I can while I still have a chance!

Long story short, I had an awesome weekend trip planned that I was really looking forward to. The forecast for the weekend was slightly cold, but full of sunshine, perfect for exploring!Instead, I got hit full force with omega cold 5000 for the past five days. It all started last Wednesday when I laid down for a nap and accidentally slept for TWO. HOURS. That’s never a good sign. I battled through the next two days loading up on every vitamin I could find. I was determined to keep my weekend plans!

But you know how colds go, they start as a throat tickle, progress to full blown can’t swallow a damn thing…then comes a massive headache and brain fog so you feel like you are living in a dream…next is congestion that makes you sound like Steve Urkel. Yeah, I got all that.

When I woke up on Saturday morning I knew an adventure was not in my best interest. I cooouuuuld go driving around Iceland in subzero temperatures, but then I would probably just feel worse afterwards. Instead I grudgingly made some soup and stayed inside. I still didn’t relax too well, because, ya know, there’s always something to do! (Laundry, dishes, cleaning…geeze Jeannie, take a hint!)Another thing you should know about me is that I hate anything that is made with chemicals. If it’s not made with herbs, derived from natural compounds, or I can’t pronounce it, I avoid it like the plague. So in times like this, I use everything I can to get better as long as it’s not medicine.

Things I have tried in the past five days to get un-sick:
52 clove garlic soup
-sauerkraut
-probiotics
-a whole tube each of zinc and multivitamin effervescent tablets
-echinacea
-vitamin D
-fish oil
viracid
-homemade bone broth
this homemade cough syrup
gelatin gummies
-steam room
-sauna
-light therapy lamp
-essential oils on my feet, nose, and in the diffuser
-humidifier
-unlimited water
-ginger tea
-green tea
turmeric ginger lemon tea
-Fisherman’s Friend natural cough drops
-sleeping
-laughter, via New Girl marathon

…I’ve tried everything! I told you this was an omega cold 5000!

I thought I was starting to feel better on Saturday afternoon after a trip to the sauna so when Bobby asked if I wanted to go snowboarding in preparation for our upcoming trip to the Swiss Alps, I said yes. The ski hill by our house lets you pay in hour increments so we said we would see how I felt after an hour. After the first run I knew it was a mistake. My legs were so exhausted I had to stop halfway down the hill to rest, and I was breathing so hard you would have thought I just competed at the Crossfit Games. After the second run I felt like I was going to cough up blood, and that’s when we left.Sunday was the lowest point. After not sleeping well for three nights straight, congestion was at it’s worst, and now I had developed a disgusting cough that made me feel like I was going to break a rib every time I had a coughing attack. Bobby made me a cocoon of blankets, started the diffuser, brought me all kinds of liquids, set up the laptop, and let me spend the rest of the day with my new best friend, the couch. I think I got up twice.

The most frustrating part of this weekend is that I hardly ever get sick! I missed one day of work the whole two years we lived in Texas, and I was over it the next day. I consider myself a healthy person…I exercise, I eat mostly meat and vegetables, I limit sugar. But I’ve been sick twice in the five months we’ve lived here. My theory is being exposed to a new set of germs – and whole country of them. Maybe after this winter I will have caught all of the viruses possible and can go on with my normal life?

So needless to say I didn’t get to go on my adventure. But guess what? There are more weekends of exploring coming up! Don’t you worry, I will battle back! More weekend adventures coming, stay tuned.

    Hope you are feeling better! And you should tell Bobby all the places look different in each season so you have to visit the same places many times throughout the year:)

    Ugh, I’m sorry you got so sick! I love your perseverance though! Glad you didn’t actually cough up blood. Hope you feel better soon.

      Thanks Emily! I’m glad I didn’t cough up blood too, that would have been the icing on the worst cake ever :/

    So sorry you weren’t feeling well this weekend! This post has me laughing my ass off!!!!! Thank you for that! Hopefully you will be feeling better soon! Oh and my Dad always made me eat super hot horseradish to clear my sinuses. Tastes disgusting but it does work.

      Lol, I know right 😉
      I’m fighting off all of these bugs before you get here so I’m in tip top shape! You should load up on vitamins before you come, I’m not letting you lay on the couch even if you’re sick 😀

    Oh mannn it sounds like the worst cold! :(( How did the garlic soup turn out? I hope you’re feeling better now! I’m the same way when I get sick… avoid chemicals like the plague! A lot of rest + fluids is the key for me.

      The garlic soup was pretty tasty! You have to really love garlic though, 52 cloves is a lot! The only down side was you’re supposed to puree it with a blender and we don’t have one yet so it was really chunky…definitely think pureeing it would have helped! 🙂
